How to Make a Dream Pillow

Dream pillows are used to promote restful sleep and pleasant dreams. They are small and flat, placed in a standard pillow, and stuffed with a sachet of calming and sleep-inducing dried herbs. As the sleeper sleeps, movements of the head will gently crush the herbs to release delightful scents and please the senses throughout the night.
For this project you will need:
  • one 16 x 5 inch rectangle of fabric (cotton, silk, etc)
  • a sewing machine or a needle and thread for hand sewing
  • pillow stuffing or 1 cup rice
  • 1 cup of dried aromatic herbs
  • (optional) a few drops of preferred essential oil (such as lavender, chamomile, rose)
Dried herbs may be harvested at home, purchased online or at local markets. Choose herbs to fit the mood and fragrance preferred. Dried rose petals, for instance, emit a floral and romantic fragrance while rosemary and mints will give you a clean, invigorating and slightly spicy result. Chamomile has a light apple-like fragrance while dried sweet woodruff emits a wonderful vanilla scent. The best way to find the right combination is to experiment. Here are some herbal suggestions:
  • Mugwort
  • Lavender
  • Hops
  • Rosemary
  • Cedar
  • Peppermint
  • Chamomile
Begin by folding the rectangle of cloth in half, lengthwise. Use your sewing machine (or needle and thread), to sew up the long sides of the rectangle, but leave the top open to make a little pouch. Turn the pouch inside out so that the seams are inside. Now, fill this pouch with your choice of stuffing (don’t over-stuff) or rice and the dried herbs. Seal the dream pillow by sewing the remaining side closed. You can make the pillow refillable by stitching some Velcro on the open ends of the fabric. Add a few drops of essential oil to the pillow, if desired. Place the dream pillow/sachet inside of your pillowcase before bed.
